There is not much difference in general.STIrefers to a broader range of infections, usually used by members of the medical community. WhereasSTDis used by common people, media and online forums specific to sexual related diseases. Both are infections and both are prone to lead to many complications and are dangerous.

Both require immediate and full course of treatment to arrest its spread. The two terms are used interchangeably under normal circumstances.
